Two Seattle companies, Amazon and Tableau, have now entered the international firestorm surrounding the latest outbreak of classified information from Wikileaks. Amazon stepped into the fray by providing hosting to the Wikileaks site after their original Swedish hosts were bombarded with cyber attacks on the day the classified documents became public. Amazon then pulled the [...]

Great topic and a first-rate interview with Joan Connell. Thanks for posting this, Jacob. And the ASReview has agreed to take the “TAO of Journalism” pledge and display the seal. Very cool!

Western Washington University’s Fairhaven College hosted a guest last week who is playing a very unique and important role in the scheme of journalism and it’s craft. Good piece in Los Angeles Times about the ”Pay to Play” trend on local television news:
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-onthemedia-20100915,0,370372.column
How many similar ”pay to play” deals are there in the Seattle-area TV market? On which stations? Are they fully disclosed? If not, why not? Are they necessary? Are they ethical?
Most Americans still get most of their news from television, according to the latest Pew Research Center survey: http://people-press.org/report/652/ Should they know more about who’s paying for what they see on TV? What do YOU think? -

On Aug. 14, the Wall Street Journal weighed in with its opinion on I-1098 in support of the “liberal” Seattle Times and went down the same crooked path of claiming I-1098 is “socking it to the richest 3%” and describes the new tax as “not just a toe-in-the water tax. They’re diving into the deep [...]

Glad to see this. I wonder how many investigations they will be able to conduct before election day. Part of me wishes they would allow the public to help fact check, similar to the Truth Squad model adopted by NewsTrust. It could be more efficient that way, (or it could not). Let’s keep our eye on this [...]

On August 18 2010, the day after the primary election, The Seattle Times started “Truth Needle” which they describe as “a new feature to help voters discern fact from fiction between now and the November election. The Truth Needle will examine the claims of candidates and campaigns in the top races and decide whether they are [...]

Thanks for the comment, Michele. Sorry for the delayed response. We’re trying to shift more comments to our WNC Facebook page, which seems to get more traffic than our website. Appreciate your encouraging words! Hey, tomorrow is national ”TAO of Journalism — Transparent, Accountable & Open” Pledge Day. Go to our TAO website and check it out. Also, watch tomorrow’s Seattle Times for the first of a 3-part NIE series on the TAO concept. We hope to keep the WNC alive and well. But funding is a constant challenge. Donations welcome!
