From time to time we receive correspondence from fellow news junkies outside of Washington State, and sometimes overseas as well . As the last fully operating news council , we’re starting to show up in search engines for people who need answers on accountability in the news media. A fellow named Bill Santagata wrote to us asking for advice on [...] -

Seattle Times – By Andrew Garber – Jan. 04 (News Report) – “It’s time, it’s the right thing to do, and I will introduce a bill to do it,” Gregoire said in a statement. “Our gay and lesbian families face the same hurdles as heterosexual families — making ends meet, choosing what school to send their kids to, finding someone to grow old with, standing in front of friends and family and making a lifetime commitment,” Gregoire said. “For all couples, a state marriage license is very important. It gives them the right to enter into a marriage contract in which [...]

The Washington News Council’s “Toast and Roast” of Dale Chihuly at our 13th Annual Gridiron West Dinner on December 15 at Fremont Studios was a smashing success. About 400 people enjoyed a raucous and rollicking evening of comedy, songs, videos, slideshows and affectionate “toasts” of Dale [...]

Putting together a ”hit list” of national food and environment writers to travel to Chile to see how the salmon farming industry and government of Chile worked together to create a plan for recovering from the devastating ISA (infectious salmon anemia) virus that nearly wiped out their industry 3 years ago. Suggestions of open-minded writers welcome.
Hi Jeanne ( @jeannemck ), thanks for the note, I know an AP reporter who lives in Chile, I will ping him over your request. Also some folks at http://journalismthatmatters.org are starting a food reporting project, it’s still in the works but can keep you in the loop as it unfolds.
Should interested folks contact you on twitter http://twitter.com/McKandCo or do you have an email address to inquire through?
Please have anyone who is interested send me an email: jmcknight@mcknightpr.com. The AP reporter in Chile would be a good bet. I’ve worked with the NY Times South American bureau 3 years ago, but the reporter–Alexei Barrionuevo–did a hatchet job on the industry. .

In my first post on the Seattle Interactive Conference , I went over some locally developed tools designed to make information more relevant and insightful. Mobile apps like Trover, which allows geo-discovery through photos, and Evri, which organizes ~15,000 news feeds into a friendly iPad interface, are useful on an individual level. But my concern is: How can they scale to community [...] -

Journalists have always covered the tech industry as a section of the newspaper, but now, due to the personal media explosion, the very existence of the trade is dependent on conversations and decisions that happen at events like this year’s Seattle Interactive Conference . #SIC2011 had many of the same trimmings as the now messianic #SXSWi (South By [...] -

Hackathons are getting trendy. Not just in journalism, but health care , education, entrepreneurism, crisis management , mobile tech , government, and other arenas. Yes, it’s another technology buzz word, but one that hopefully sticks around and evolves into a combustible formula. Bringing together software experts and social leaders who sprint together to solve big challenges is a remarkable thing, especially when there’s a $10,000 prize [...] -
